Chronic pain can be devastating, and it affects millions of people. In fact, up to 15 percent of the U.S. population has chronic pain, and up to 5% have chronic pain so severe that it interferes with their daily lives.

Chronic pain treatment is available, although many people have been told they would simply need to learn to live with it. There are a number of different treatment options and range from very safe, non-invasive methods like complementary treatments or physical therapy, to more expensive and much more invasive procedures, including surgery.
Here are some options for chronic pain treatment:

Noninvasive Non-Drug Pain Management
• Exercise
• Manual techniques
• Behavioral modification
• Cutaneous stimulation
• Electrotherapy

Noninvasive Pharmacologic Pain Management
Studies have shown that many people who suffer from chronic pain are frequently not given enough pain medication. According to the National Chronic Pain Outreach Association, there are more than 30 million patients who suffer from chronic pain, and seven million of them cannot relieve their pain without opioids (also known as narcotics), but unfortunately only 4,000 doctors in the country are willing to prescribe them.
• Analgesics
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs)
• Muscle relaxants
• Narcotic medications
• Antidepressants and anticonvulsants

Invasive Pain Management Techniques
• Injections
• Prolotherapy
• Surgically implanted electrotherapy devices
• Implantable opioid infusion pumps
• Radiofrequency radioablation

If you are seeking chronic pain treatment, it is in your best interest to seek out a team of chronic pain treatment specialists, who can help create the best plan for you and your needs.
