Fibromyalgia Research
There are numerous clinical studies and research projects around the world attempting to discover the underlying cause of fibromyalgia, such as an infectious agent or toxin. Both genetic factors and viruses have been identified as potential causes. Ideally, once the cause is determined, then a test may be developed.
The National Institutes of Health is working on a number of different areas in fibromyalgia, including:
• Understanding pain
• Improving sleep
• Improving symptoms
• Developing new treatments
• Understanding variations in a gene called ADRA1A
• Establishment of a tissue bank for brain and spinal cord tissue from fibromyalgia sufferers
Potential medications that are in development include drugs used to block substance P or nerve growth factor.
