Living with Fibromyalgia
Living well with fibromyalgia is possible, though certainly a challenge for the almost 6 million people in the United States. While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, there are a number of treatment options available, including complementary and alternative options.
Pain is one of the most difficult aspects of living with fibromyalgia and is generally widespread, and involves both sides of the body. Pain typically affects the neck, buttocks, shoulders, muscle aches, trigger points, fatigue, and brain fog. Extreme fatigue is often as debilitating as the pain.
However, there are many ways that people with fibromyalgia can improve their health, lessen their symptoms and take control of their lives.
What to Consider
If you, or someone you know is living with fibromyalgia, take these steps:
• Join a support group – contact your health care provider for local resources
• Find online support forums
• Follow new studies for the latest treatment research
• Eat a well-balanced diet, and drink lots of water
• Soak in a hot tub or warm bath for at least 30 minutes a day
• Exercise as tolerated
• Talk to your health care provider about medications and supplements
• Look for ways to reduce stress in your life
Living well with fibromyalgia requires you to be responsible for your own health. You should get second opinions, do your own research and reading, and take the lead in caring for yourself. With a healthy foundation and excellent care, you, too can live with fibromyalgia.
