The psychology of chronic fatigue syndrome

Being a fairly new disease, chronic fatigue syndrome is not so well-understood. In fact, there is no one that could directly point the cause of this illness. Other people (most probably the skeptics who have no idea how debilitating the illness can be) even believe that chronic fatigue syndrome exists only in the mind. Are they simply insensitive, or plainly right?
Chronic fatigue syndrome does have physiological factors. People suffering from it feel extreme exhaustion, coupled with sleep disturbances, headaches, joint pains, and even sore throat. Chronic fatigue syndrome is treated based on the symptoms found, but therapies are also part of the treatment regimen. The cognitive behavioral therapy is used to treat memory impairment and concentration difficulties that come along with this illness.
In 2002, chronic fatigue syndrome was recognized as a debilitating disease. A study in 2005 further showed that the physical symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome are aggravated by the presence of the psychological ones.
We cannot really say that this illness is purely physiological or psychological. It is a combination of both, and treatment should be done to cater to both of these aspects.
