Is laughter the best medicine for fibromyalgia?
As the cliché goes, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Although I have never really heard of a doctor who prescribed laughter to his patient, research shows that the best treatment for fibromyalgia is, in fact, good ole laughter!
Laughter’s therapeutic value is recognized all over the world. Moreover, the fact that laughter can cause certain physiological responses is backed up by scientific research. In other words, something really happens to our body when we laugh.
Among all the good effects of laughter such as increasing antibodies and reducing the release of hormones during times of stress, perhaps the most relevant to fibromyalgia is the fact that laughter can increase a person’s pain tolerance.
We all know that fibromyalgia is an illness involving chronic pain, and so laughter can greatly help people with fibromyalgia to improve their perception to pain. Not to mention that laughter per se can make anyone feel good. As another cliché goes, “Live, love, laugh!”
