Treating Fibromyalgia - Is it Possible?

Imagine having to quit a full-time job because of a chronic illness that zaps your energy and has you aching all over. A person with fibromyalgia has a big chance of becoming depressed because of their condition, especially if their loved ones are not understanding towards them. Today, there are only two medicines approved by the FDA to treat the illness. Studies are still ongoing to develop more medicines that will provide better treatment to patients. The goal of existing treatment is to help the patient feel recharged rather than tired after sleeping. This is commonly prioritized because without a restful and satisfying sleep, the body will not perform its usual functions such as tissue repair, antibody production and regulation of the immune system. Muscle relaxants and pain relieving injections on specific aching points are also part of the treatment. It’s also best for a person with fibromyalgia to undergo physical and occupational therapy, a regular visit to the chiropractor and therapeutic massage sessions.

As of today, there are now three FDA approved prescription drugs for FM; Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Savella, soon to be four as JZP-6 (Sodium Oxybate) is in the last stages.
