Can Your Gait Tell Your Doctor that You Have Fibromyalgia?
Could it be that the way you walk can help physicians determine whether or not you have fibromyalgia? A researcher from the University of Granada believes that he has created a reliable diagnostic tool that can help diagnose patients when combined with criteria from the American College of Rheumatology.
The researcher chose 64 women with fibromyalgia and 45 women without the condition; he also chose 12 men with fibromyalgia and 12 without. He then subjected all of the groups to a battery of physical and medical tests.
What the researcher found was that “patients with fibromyalgia present noticeable alteration of motion parameters associated with low performance in other variables as body constitution, and psychosocial and strength tests” (ScienceDaily, 2010).
What specifically was different in the gaits of those diagnosed with fibromyalgia? The following were found to be altered:
• Length of steps
• Speed of walking
• The pressure of the sole on the ground
• Time spent on each foot, as well as both feet
These, and other measured factors, were found to be altered in the study participants with fibromyalgia. If this science can be verified, gait may soon be one of the parameters used to diagnose patients with fibromyalgia.
