How to deal with chronic fatigue syndrome?

Chronic fatigue syndrome or CFS is a disorder which causes extreme tiredness, lasting up to 6 months or longer (sometimes even years!). It has a number of distinct physical symptoms such as short term memory loss, inability to concentrate, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes in the neck and armpits.

Exactly what triggers CFS is not known, but according to some recent research studies it could be illness, stress or even viruses like bacterium chlamydia pneumoniae (which causes pneumonia and other illnesses). However, in many cases CFC appears even in the absence of these causes.

Medical help is of course needed to cure CFS; however, keeping the following points in mind will make it easier to cope up with this disease:

• Exercise regularly. It may be difficult for a person suffering from CFS to muster enough energy to exercise; however giving up physical work out will only worsen the situation. Regular exercise refreshes the mind and body and helps in improving energy levels in the long run.

• Take up some stress busting activities; nurture a hobby, listen to music, join a dance class, meditate regularly or play a sport, make sure you do something at the end of the day to de-stress.

• Don’t let your emotions bottle up as this can add to your stress levels. Express your feelings and don’t hesitate to ask for support from friends and family members whenever you feel the need.

• To deal with memory loss, make ‘to do lists” and maintain a journal of your daily activities. Since CFS has both physical and psychological causes and effects it requires a holistic treatment, therefore apart from medicines to cure the physical symptoms, it is important to take care of your mental well being as well.
