Since Savella is so new, I thought that I might provide a little information for those who might not have heard of this drug. Savella (milnacipran HCl) is a newly approved drug that works by blocking the reuptake of two key neurotransmitters (serotonin and norepinephrine) thought to be important in causing the symptoms of fibromyalgia, such as chronic pain and fatigue. It shows preference towards norepinephrine, which makes it unique.
Savella, which is just now becoming widely available, passed phase 3 clinical trials of over 2,000 patients with fibromyalgia; patients reported significant improvements in terms of pain, fatigue, and overall functioning. Savella is usually taken twice a day in doses ranging from 50 to 100 mg. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, constipation and hot flushes.
Savella may not be for everyone. Patients who have high blood pressure, liver disease, glaucoma or other health conditions may not be good candidates for Savella. You should discuss with your doctor whether Savella might be right for you.
