I have a cousin with

I have a cousin with fibromyalgia, just diagnosed and I have noticed some severe moods swings. I can imagine she is going through a lot but just wondering if this is common and any suggestions on how to deal?

Fibromyalgia is thought to

Fibromyalgia is thought to involve dysregualtion of the stress response system. Persons with fibromyalgia frequently experience depression and anxiety.Chronic pain coupled with lack of sleep and uncertainty about the future would make anyone irritable or moody.
As for how to help her deal with her emotions, there are several things you can do. First of all, allow her to talk about her feelings regarding her diagnosis. Being diagnosed with a chronic illness is frightening. Secondly, be non judgemental; she is likely experiencing a cascade of emotions, and reacting negatively to any negative emotions will not be helpful. Lastly, offer to help and mean it! Providing a meal or help with grocery shopping will mean a lot to her, but don't offer if you don't plan on following through.
Give her some time to work through some of her emotions. Being newly diagnosed with a chronic illness can be scary and it will take a little time for her to become accustomed to her new reality.
