i went to the doctor
i went to the doctor complaining of backaches and they did an xray. they found nothing serious enough to provoke such pain, so after a few general questions they diagnosed me with FM. i don't know if i am in a state of denial or if i actually should seek another opinion.. some of the symptoms of fm do match with many things i have but it has never been so serious to leave me bedridden. how can i know?
Hi there, Unfortunately,
Hi there,
Unfortunately, there is no simple test to determine whether or not you have FM. FM is essentially a condition of exclusion, diagnosed after all other possible causes for symptoms have been ruled out.
Not all people with FM are "bedridden", although they may experience periods of time when their symptoms are worse. If you do have FM, you may be one of the fortunate ones who suffers from milder symptoms. On the other hand, some people's symptoms worsen over time.
If you are truly in doubt, it may be beneficial for you to seek a second opinion, if only for your peace of mind.
Take care.

I agree that second opinion
I agree that second opinion would be worthwhile, though I specifically recommend seeing a rheumatologist.
In addition, here are some tests which may rule out other issues:
a. Complete blood count and other blood tests. These tests will rule out common blood disorders which could also cause severe and chronic fatigue;
b. Kidney and liver tests. Such tests will also inquire into the integrity or abnormality of blood chemistries;
c. Check cholesterol level, blood sugar level, calcium levels, blood protein, etc.;
d. Thyroid tests to check the thyroid activity;
e. Check for inflammation in the body, a rough index of which can be tested through the red blood cell sedimentation rate. Infections and arthritis will register abnormalities on this test;
f. X-rays to determine if any abnormalities cause the widespread pain.
thank you so much. i will try
thank you so much. i will try to get a second opinion then, and see if i can get all these tests done. thank you.
